In 1961, Gary U.S. Bonds hit #1 in the US with “Quarter To Three,” and he stayed there for two weeks.

In 1965, The Byrds went to #1 on the US singles chart with their version of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” the recording generally considered to be the beginning of folk rock and the “California Sound.” Roger McGuinn was the only member of The Byrds who actually played on that recording, with the rest of the instruments played by the famed Wrecking Crew session musicians.

In 1969, The Hollies recorded “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” with a then-unknown Elton John on piano.

In 1995, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder left the stage due to illness after only seven songs during an outdoor concert in San Francisco. Neil Young stepped up to finish the show.

In 1999, With 100 of his guitars at auction to raise money for his Crossroads Centre drug rehab clinic in Antigua, Eric Clapton raised almost $5 million. The guitar he used on “Layla,” a 1956 Fender Stratocaster, went for nearly $500,000.

Americana fans will not have to miss out this year. The Americana Music Association Foundation has announced “Thriving Roots: A Virtual Community Music Conference”. It’s a new online music industry conference experience from Sept. 16-18, 2020. The virtual conference will feature Rosanne Cash, John Leventhal, Mavis Staples as well as AMAF Board Members Jackson Browne, Rhiannon Giddens and T Bone Burnett.
