Top Ten Spins of the Week (6/17/2022)

 

1. Afghan Whigs have announced their first studio album in nine years! The record is expected for release on September 9th via Royal Cream/BMG. 'How Do You Burn?' is the band's ninth studio album. The album's second single, "The Getaway," debuted last month. Afghan Whigs is the collaboration between musicians Greg Dulli, John Curley, Rick Nelson, Patrick Keeler, and Christopher Thorn. The band will be appearing this fall in Southern California! You can see Afghan Whigs on October 9th at Ohana Festival's Encore weekend in Dana Point.

 

2. This next artist has been a fan favorite for multiple decades. "Make A Picture" is from Andrew Bird's 2022 album 'Inside Problems.' The LP was released earlier this month and follows Bird's 2020 solo album 'Hark!' 'Inside Problems' is an 11-track record produced by musician Mike Viola. Andrew is an acclaimed violinist as well as an accomplished songwriter and composer. He is currently performing on the Outside Problems Tour co-headlined by Iron & Wine. Make sure to tune into 88.5 FM on Saturdays from 6-7 pm because Andrew Bird is this month's Artist In Residence!

 

3. Maggie Rogers recently revealed the first single off her upcoming sophomore album 'Surrender.' "That's Where I Am" was released via Capitol Records along with a fantastic music video featuring David Byrne. Preceding 'Surrender' is the widely acclaimed 2016 record 'Heard It in a Past Life.' One of the most popular songs on the album, "Alaska," instantly became a hit after receiving high praise from Pharrell Williams. 'Surrender' will be available on July 29th! 

 

4. Harry Styles is back with a brand new album! 'Harry's House' is already a fan favorite after its release last month via Columbia and Erskine Records. With 13 songs featuring the chart-topping lead single "As It Was," Harry will be taking his record on tour starting this June. Styles landed a 15-show run of shows coming to The Kia Forum this fall. 'Harry's House' follows the incredibly successful 2019 album 'Fine Line.' 

 

5. "Summer In New York" is the third track off of Sofi Tukker's latest album. The genre-defying duo is comprised of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. The title of their 2022 record, 'WET TENNIS,' is an acronym for the motto "When Everyone Tries To Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe." The album features artists such as Chicago-based DJ John Summit and Amadou & Mariam, the latter being a musical duo from Mali. You can catch Sofi Tukker joined by The Knocks and Mary Droppinz tomorrow, June 18th, at the Shrine Expo Hall.

 

6. The Black Keys are back with a brand new album! "Wild Child" is from the 2022 record 'Dropout Boogie.' Before the album's release on May 13th, The Black Keys had an intimate pop-up show at the Troubadour before kicking off their national tour. The Black Keys will be back in Southern California for their upcoming show at The Kia Forum on October 8th. The duo was formed in 2001 by musicians Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. 'Dropout Boogie' is their eleventh studio album!

 

7. The newly independent band Lo Moon is basking in the success of their newest album, 'A Modern Life.' The album comes off of their recently created label Strnger Recordings, after previously being signed to Columbia Records. The Los Angeles-based band consists of musicians Matthew Lowell, Crisanta Baker, Samuel Stewart, and Sterling Laws. 'A Modern Life' is Lo Moon's sophomore album that comes four years after their eponymous debut record in 2018. You can experience some of the band's brand new songs like "Expectations" alongside old favorites such as "Loveless" on June 28th at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery presented by 88.5 FM!

 

8. The iconic French band Phoenix is back with "Alpha Zulu," their first single in two years! Phoenix was created in the mid-1990s by musicians Thomas Mars, Deck d'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai, and Laurent Brancowitz. The band has confirmed that they are finishing up their 7th studio album, a release date remains unknown. Phoenix's many accomplishments include winning the Grammy for "Best Alternative Album" in 2010 for their record 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix' and headlining sold-out shows and festivals worldwide. The band will be performing in Inglewood on October 6th at the Youtube Theater!

 

9. "Hard Working Man" is from Marcus King's upcoming album, 'Young Blood.' This marks King's second solo album following his 2020 debut record 'El Dorado,' both of which were produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. 'Young Blood' was recorded in Nashville at Easy Eye Sound Studio and is due for release on August 26th. Marcus King will be performing his new album on a national tour this fall. King will be making stops in Los Angeles at The Wiltern on October 7th and in Dana Point at Ohana Festival on October 8th.

 

10. Craig Finn's 2022 record 'A Legacy of Rentals' marks the artist's sixth solo studio album. Prior to his prominence as a solo artist, Craig was and still is the frontman of The Hold Steady. Produced by musician Josh Kaufman, "Birthdays" appeared earlier this year as the album's lead single.
