Music Director Picks #5: Cat Power, The Decemberists, The Moth & The Flame

885 music director picks FB8

88.5 FM receives so much music on a daily basis... CDs, downloads, reissues, box sets, cassette tapes, vinyl records and more. Songs are generally chosen by committee at the station, but it's the job of the music director to go through the stacks and stacks with a fine tooth comb. This blog may include major label releases, independent artists, even random submissions for your listening pleasure.

Music Director Picks #5

CAT POWER featuring LANA DEL REY - WOMAN

There are few voices more deeply embedded in indie rock than that of Chan Marshall. Under the name Cat Power, Marshall has released music for about 25 years... her prowess as a songwriter, producer and singer has grown more influential with time. On her 10th studio album called Wanderer, Cat Power offers a collection of songs that function as fantastic examples of her creativity.

THE DECEMBERISTS - TRAVELING ON

The Decemberists will release a new EP called Traveling On on December 14. The five-song EP (available on vinyl, CD, and as a digital album) is a collection of b-sides from the sessions of their eighth studio album I’ll Be Your Girl, which came out in March. You can hear the title track “Traveling On” on 88.5 FM and right here on this blog.

THE MOTH & THE FLAME - THE NEW GREAT DEPRESSION

This is The Moth & The Flame's return from a year long hiatus after lead singer Brandon Robbins donated his kidney. With songwriting as his outlet during recovery, Robbins along with his band-mates cover the serious topics of anxiety and depression through their new album. “There are some really dark and uncomfortable moments contrasted with breakthroughs of clarity, beauty and hope,” Robbins shares. “It’s something we feel really strongly about, especially with how prevalent depression is today.”
