Music Director Picks #1: Hozier, Kurt Vile, Mark Knopfler

885 music director picks FB

88.5 FM receives so much music on a daily basis... CDs, downloads, reissues, box sets, cassette tapes, vinyl records and more. Songs are generally chosen by committee at the station, but it's the job of the music director to go through the stacks and stacks with a fine tooth comb. This blog may include major label releases, independent artists, even random submissions for your listening pleasure.

Music Director Picks #1

HOZIER with MAVIS STAPLES - Nina Cried Power

Hozier visited the radio station years ago around the time his song "Take Me To Church" hit the mainstream. The song had so much commercial success, which is great for a recording artist, but Hozier was concerned about being pigeonholed... being simply labeled at a pop star seemed to really bother him. Flash forward to present day and Hozier has hit it out of the park with an incredibly powerful song, featuring one of the most important artists of any generation, the great Mavis Staples. Hozier just performed a series of shows in LA to promote the album. His Nina Cried Power EP is available now.

KURT VILE - Loading Zones

Kurt didn't always have success in the music world, but he always had aspirations to make a career out of music. This Pennsylvania native is a former member and collaborator with Adam Granduciel and the band The War On Drugs. After a number of solo releases with his own band The Violators, a collaboration with slick Australian songwriter Courtney Barnett, the new album from Vile "Bottle It In" seems to capture brilliant song-crafting in a bottle.

MARK KNOPFLER - Good On You Son

Mark Knopfler is a guitar legend and titan of rock music. Some of those classic Dire Straits songs will be featured on the radio forever. After a highly successful career spanning many years with many accomplishments, Knopfler has not only announced a 2019 tour, but has released some new music that sounds just perfect on 88.5 FM. We not only celebrate his extensive music catalog, but are happy to turn our listeners on to any new music Knopfler may release.
